Marriage Certificate FAQs
Find answers about Dominican marriage record searches, official certificates, apostilles, delivery and payments.
1. How do I start a marriage record search?
Complete the request form with the information you have about the marriage and select the search fee based on the year of the record.
The initial fee is US$29 for marriages registered in 1970 or later, US$49 for marriages between 1950 and 1969, and US$95 for marriages registered in 1949 or earlier.
Once payment has been received, our team will begin searching for and verifying the marriage record.
2. Does the initial payment include access to the digital record?
The initial payment covers the marriage record search and verification service.
Once the record has been located, we will notify you by email so you can review the information found and decide whether to obtain the official certificate.
The information located during the search does not replace an official certificate issued by the Central Electoral Board (JCE).
3. How much does a marriage record search cost?
Search fees depend on the year of the marriage:
- 1970 or later: US$29
- 1950 to 1969: US$49
- 1949 or earlier: US$95
These fees cover the search and verification of the marriage record. Obtaining the official certificate is a separate service that can be requested once the record has been located.
4. What will I receive once my marriage record has been found?
We will send you an email notification with information about the marriage record located.
You will be able to review the available details, such as the spouses' names, marriage date and place of registration.
You may then request the official marriage certificate if required.
5. What happens if my marriage record cannot be found?
We will inform you of the search results and, where appropriate, may request additional information or recommend alternative ways to continue the search.
Payment for the search does not guarantee that the record will be located. However, you will not be charged for the issuance of an official certificate that you have not requested.
6. How much does an official marriage certificate cost?
Once the marriage record has been located and verified, you can choose between two options:
- Official Marriage Certificate: US$66
- Official Marriage Certificate with Apostille: US$86
Both options include standard international delivery.
7. Do I need to pay US$66 and then US$86 if I require an apostille?
No. These are two separate options.
You can request the official marriage certificate for US$66, or the official marriage certificate with an apostille for US$86.
If you require an apostilled certificate, you only pay for the second option, in addition to the applicable record search fee.
8. What is the difference between the information found and the official marriage certificate?
The information found during the search allows you to verify that the marriage record exists and review the available details.
The official marriage certificate is issued by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and can be used for legal, immigration, citizenship and other procedures requiring official documentation.
9. Do I need an apostille for my marriage certificate?
This depends on the country, institution and purpose for which you intend to use the document.
An apostille authenticates the signature and official capacity of the person who signed the document, allowing it to be recognised in countries that are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention.
If the receiving institution requires an apostille, we can arrange both the official marriage certificate and its apostille.
10. Is standard international delivery included?
Yes. Standard international delivery is included with both the US$66 official marriage certificate and the US$86 apostilled certificate.
Standard delivery typically takes 2 to 5 weeks.
Express international delivery is also available for an additional US$139.
11. How long does a marriage record search take?
Most searches receive an initial update within 2 to 5 business days.
Historical records and requests involving limited information may require additional time.
This timeframe refers to an update on the search, not necessarily the final location of the record.
12. Do I need to know the certificate number, registry book or folio number?
No. We can begin a search using the spouses' names, approximate marriage date and the location where the marriage took place or was registered.
If you have the certificate number, registry book, folio number, identification number or other relevant details, providing them may help us locate the record more efficiently.
13. What information do I need to start a marriage record search?
We recommend providing as much information as possible, particularly the full names of both spouses, approximate marriage date, and the municipality or province where the marriage took place or was registered.
You do not need to have every detail to submit a request.
14. What if I do not know the exact marriage date?
You can provide an approximate year or a range of dates.
If the marriage date or place of registration is unknown, our team will assess the available information to determine how to proceed with the search.
In some cases, additional information may be required before the investigation can continue.
15. Is finding the marriage record guaranteed?
No. The outcome depends on the existence of the record, the information available and the condition of the relevant archives.
Some records may contain errors, name variations, incomplete details or may have been registered in a different location.
Our team will conduct the search using the information provided and keep you informed of the results.
16. What happens if there is an error in the marriage record?
If we identify an inconsistency, we will inform you before proceeding with the official certificate.
Some errors may require administrative or judicial correction procedures.
Where additional action is necessary, we will explain the available options and associated costs before proceeding.
17. Can I request someone else's marriage record?
Yes. We can assess requests to search for another person's marriage record, provided sufficient information is available to identify the marriage correctly.
Access to documents and information remains subject to applicable legal and administrative requirements.
18. What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are securely processed through Stripe.
We accept major credit and debit cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay where available.
Dominican Vital Records does not directly store your card details.
19. What is your refund policy?
If we have not provided any update on your request within 20 business days, you may request a refund directly from our team.
Refunds are normally processed within 48 to 72 business hours.
This policy does not guarantee that every marriage record can be located.
20. Do you offer certified translations?
Yes. We offer certified translation services for US$95 for legal, immigration and administrative purposes.
You can request this additional service if you need to present your marriage certificate in another language.
21. Can I request more than one marriage certificate?
Yes. Once the marriage record has been located, we can arrange additional official certificates if required.
The cost will depend on the number of certificates requested and any additional services needed.
22. How will I receive updates about my request?
Updates will be sent to the email address provided when submitting your request.
We may also use WhatsApp or SMS for communications relating to your case if you have authorised these methods.
23. Why is the process divided into two stages?
We divide the service into two stages so you can verify that the marriage record exists before paying for the official certificate.
During the first stage, we search for and verify the marriage record, with fees starting at US$29.
Once the record has been located, you can decide whether to proceed with the official marriage certificate for US$66 or the apostilled certificate for US$86.
This allows you to review the search results before ordering the official document.
